The Counter updates the classic boxcar-diner look.
A 24-hour diner, The Counter, has opened in the brand-new Thompson Toronto hotel.
Seating 105 and covering 2,900 sq. ft., the restaurant serves breakfast from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and an all-day menu from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Staples include an all-day breakfast, burgers, mac ’n’ cheese, milkshakes and salads.
Canadiana comes courtesy of poutine and sandwiches (peameal-bacon and Montreal smoked-meat).
The restaurant is licensed from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.
Visually, the restaurant is a modern interpretation of the original boxcar diner: curved-wood ceiling, patterned floor tile, blue-velvet banquettes, handblown lampshades and flocked wallpaper inspired by art deco.
Additional features include three 42-inch plasma televisions.
Located at Bathurst and Wellington Streets, in Toronto’s entertainment district, the Thompson Toronto opened in mid-June and will likely be a hot destination for meeting and event planners.
