Canadian visitors will soon need visas to visit the United Arab Emirates (UAE), according to a notice posted on the federation’s website.
Earlier this week, the website of the UAE’s Ottawa embassy posted a notice which read, “Effective January 02, 2011, Canadian passport holders will need a visa.”
It is widely believed that the visa requirement was the latest chapter in a dispute involving the United Arab Emirates’ landing rights in Canada.
Last week, the UAE ordered Canadian troops to withdraw from a military base in Dubai, after the federal government refused to allow airlines Emirates and Etihad to increasing their landings at Canadian airports.
Recently, Dubai has seen a drop in tourism, so the new visa requirements could deter Canadian groups, such as those led by meeting and event planners, from visiting the region.
