The Calgary Telus Convention Centre (CTCC) partnered with the Human Resources Institute of Alberta (HRIA) to test its first Alberta HR Conference eco-friendly conference April 23-24.

To begin ‘greening’ its annual conference, members of HRIA received monthly e-mails beginning last November to promote registration. E-mail communications and online registration were chosen to save paper and reduce hydrocarbon consumption. More than 90 per cent of HRIA-generated materials (including the conference programme, daily newspaper and AGM report) were printed on 100 per cent post-consumer waste, processed chlorine-free and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

To make recycling easy for delegates, CTCC placed containers throughout the conference and meeting areas. All food waste was driven to a composting facility in Bowden, Alta.

CTCC houses more than 122,000 sq. ft. of flexible meeting and exhibit space.
