L’Hôtel des Seigneurs, in Saint-Hyacinthe, Que., has planted more than 1,800 trees to offset the greenhouse gas emissions produced by meetings and events at its property in 2007, as part of the hotel’s Save our Planet eco-meetings package.
Undertaken with the assistance of the Quebec Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and its affiliated agency, Zone de Vie, the planting took place at the Giarmic Farm, certified organic cereal growers located in St-Hugues, Que., about 30 km east of the hotel. Apart from neutralizing greenhouse gas emissions, the 1,800 trees will serve as a windbreaker along the cultivated land and an isolating barrier against pesticides used on neighbouring lands. Moreover, the trees will help to increase crop production, protect the land against wind erosion and serve as a protective strip against the riverbank.
