Toronto’s Exhibition Place has won a platinum facility-management award from the Recycling Council of Ontario.
Handed out Oct. 21 at the 2008 Waste Minimization Awards, the accolade recognizes buildings that showcase internal waste-minimization programmes.
Since 2001, Exhibition Place has been part of the City of Toronto waste Diversion Task Force 2010, which has set aggressive waste-diversion targets. Currently, Exhibition Place achieves a waste-diversion level of 63 per cent, with an aim to reach 80 per cent by 2010.
Among the long list of materials the facility recycles are organic waste, batteries, cardboard, lamps, used clothing, fine paper, rubber tires, wood, hand towels and ink cartridges.
Upcoming recycling initiatives include washroom fixtures and identified opportunities for reduction of paper-product waste by utilizing electronic documentation, where appropriate.
