Aeroplan is the inaugural company to embrace the world’s first eco-friendly loyalty/gift card. Developed by Toronto-based Innovative Graphics Group, the EnviroCard is a compostable and biodegradable alternative to the plastic loyalty and gift cards in widespread use. Unlike those cards made from polyvinylchloride (PVC) material, the EnviroCard is produced from plant-based resins and, according to lab tests, is 99-per-cent biodegradable, with the remaining 1 per cent composed of naturally occurring elements that don’t harm the environment.
The card is available in two biodegradable varieties: a plant-based polylactic acid (PLA) version made from agricultural products and a paper laminated version.
Beginning in 2009, Aeroplan’s new cards will be EnviroCards instead of plastic.
