Vin Room wine bar opened Dec. 12 in Calgary’s trendy Mission district, serving sommelier Karen Kho’s list of 300 labels (New and Old World vintages and boutique bottlings).
Highlighting executive chef Kai Salimaki’s lunch and evening tasting menu – creative New American cuisine, augmented by cheeses and desserts – are an array of carefully chosen wine pairings.
Special tasting nights are planned, as is a loyalty programme that includes a ‘smart card’ allowing customers to view and track online the type, year and description of each wine they try.
“We’re taking the pressure and attitude out of learning about wine,” says owner Phoebe Fung. In the process, Fung has, undoubtedly, raised grape expectations among Calgary oenophiles.
