Terminal 5 at London’s Heathrow Airport is set to begin operating March 27, providing capacity for another 30-million passengers, making Heathrow the world’s busiest airport.
Passenger flows have been extensively modeled to ensure minimal queuing at every stage. The new terminal will feature 96 self-service kiosks, 140 customer-service desks, including 96 fast-bag drops, and highly advanced X-Ray machines.
“British Airport Authority [BAA] is already redeveloping Terminal 3, and when Terminal 5 opens, will modernize Terminals 1 and 4. BAA has also received planning permission to build a new, environmentally-efficient terminal called Heathrow East [replacing Terminal 2 and The Queens Building],” said Stephen Nelson, CEO of BAA.
On-site retailers will include Harrods, Paul Smith and Tiffany. Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay will open his first airport-based restaurant there.
