WestJet, Air France, KLM Agree to Code-Share

By Don Douloff, February 12, 2009

West JetWestJet, Air France and KLM have agreed to undertake a number of joint marketing activities, including code-sharing.

The joint memorandum of understanding allows the airlines to begin working on building a code-sharing agreement in late 2009 or early 2010. Prior to this, the carriers will consider additional opportunities, including an interline agreement, namely, acceptance of each other’s e-tickets and through check-in of baggage and passengers, technology permitting. Possibilities for cooperation on frequent-flyer programmes will also be explored.

A code-sharing agreement would involve the Canadian gateways of Calgary, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, where customers of the three airlines would connect with each other’s networks.

For Air France and KLM, the agreement offers an opportunity to increase their services to Canada and boost the number of destinations.
