It's important to take health precautions when travelling.

As a business traveller, it’s imperative to take precautions in order to stay healthy on flights, so that the only thing you ‘pick up’ is your bag and coat when you touch down.

With this in mind, the team at price-comparison website Cheapflights.ca has compiled “The ten things to have in your hand luggage to keep you healthy” to help ward off a cold, flu or the H1N1 virus while travelling this season.

Here are five of those suggestions:

1. Hand sanitizer – Just a small amount, 100ml (3oz) or less for the plane, and use it like it’s going out of fashion. And then keep your hands away from your mouth, eyes and nose.

2. Rub a little antibiotic ointment or nasal gel on the inside of your nose, to prevent you from inhaling airborne germs.

3. Bring an inflatable neck pillow and use your coat as a blanket – Airlines may not always clean their blankets and pillows between flights.

4. A fizzing Vitamin C tablet that you can dissolve in water and drink during the flight.

5. Antibacterial wipes – Use them to clean anything you may rest your hands on: the tray top, the armrest, the blind, the door handle in the toilet. In fact, think of all the surfaces on a plane as being about as hygienic as a public toilet.
