Philip M. Barnes, regional vice-president, Pacific Northwest and general manager, Fairmont Pacific Rim, has announced that Michael J. Pye has been appointed general manager at Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. Pye’s appointment was effective January 6, 2014.
As general manager of the luxury 556-room hotel, Pye will oversee a $12 million lobby renovation that will be completed for the hotel’s 75th anniversary this coming fall. Most recently the general manager of the Fairmont Winnipeg, he brings 17 years of hotel experience and holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Calgary with majors in marketing and tourism hospitality management.
Pye has worked his way up the hotel ladder, starting in the stewarding department of the Fairmont Jasper in 1996. He has held a series of progressive roles with Fairmont Hotels including the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald in Edmonton, Fairmont Waterfront in Vancouver, the Fairmont Southampton in Bermuda, and was promoted to general manager at the Fairmont Winnipeg in 2010.
An active participant in the community, Pye is a Maître Hôtelier for the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs and looks forward to getting involved in the Vancouver tourism and hospitality industry. While in Winnipeg, he was a board member of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, member of the Asper School of Business, on the board of directors for Economic Development Winnipeg Inc., and member of the Red River College Hospitality and Tourism Management Advisory Committee.
