Gopal Rao, regional vice-president, sales and marketing for Canada, at InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), has been named regional general manager of South West Asia.
Effective Jan. 1, 2013, he will be based in Delhi, India, in IHG’s AMEA region, to work as part of the leadership team headquartered in that city. He will report to Douglas Martell, vice-president operations, South West Asia.
He will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the portfolio of hotels across the country, as well as new openings in this growth market.
In the interim, the Canadian sales and marketing office, located in Mississauga, Ont., will be led by Josephine Allan, director of marketing.
Since joining IHG in Canada in 2007, Rao has led the team to many successes, including targeting the Canadian sports market and launching more than 35 new national and property-based sales activities.
Outside of IHG, Rao serves as the chair of the Tourism Industry Association of Canada.
