Grand Princess Launches first year–long season out of San Francisco

BY ANNE DIMON

The first cruise ship to be based year-round in San Francisco is Princess Cruises’ Grand Princess.

The 2,600-passenger vessel will be based at the Port of San Francisco through spring of 2014, offering 37 round trip sailings—ranging between 7 and 15 days—to Alaska, Mexico, the California coast and Hawaii.

The Grand Princess was transformed top to bottom a couple of years ago to add a new atrium, several new eateries and the line’s first specialty tea lounge. Also included in the renovation were seven new window suites; remodeled casino, boutiques and art gallery; enhancements to the spa; and the addition of a new lounge and nightclub. There are 26 suites with private balconies and 76 percent of outside cabins have balconies.

Princess Cruises has a 40-year history of operating cruise ships from the Port of San Francisco but this is the first time one of their ships will use the Port of San Francisco as a home base.
