The Green Meeting Industry Council (GMIC) has signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a Canadian chapter by July.

“We are committed to becoming an established GMIC Chapter by Canada Day, July 1,” said Mariela McIlwraith, CMP, CMM, president of GMIC’s Canada Chapter in Formation. “Our vision is to promote education and innovation in sustainable meetings in Canada, and support business connections for our members.”

“we plan for the Chapter to be national in scope,” she says. “We will likely host events in various locations in Canada, with the plan of having a hybrid element (such as the ability for members to join in virtually).”

She adds, “One of our goals for the chapter is to help members feel connected to GMIC regardless of their location. We are designing our events and communications in such a way as to be as inclusive as possible for all of our members.”

The Chapter in Formation is actively recruiting board and committee members, and plans to offer its first live and virtual events in the coming months, said chapter officer Judy Kucharuk.

“As a meeting planner from a smaller community, I am committed to ensuring that every member has a voice and a place within the chapter, wherever in Canada they’re from,” she said.
