The official groundbreaking for the $130-million Ripley’s aquarium at the base of Toronto’s CN Tower heralds a potentially huge tourist attraction for the city.

The aquarium will feature a 96-metre-long moving walkway, in a see-through tunnel, below a shark lagoon inhabited by sand tiger sharks. Initially, the 1.5-million-gallon aquarium won’t be fully stocked, but it will be able to host 13,500 sea creatures, or approximately 450 species.

Moreover, the main exhibition space will feature a tropical reef tank, along with Great Lakes exhibits and Atlantic and Pacific habitats.

It will also feature aquatic life-support systems with special recovery basins that reclaim, clean and re-use water.

The attraction is expected to open in summer, 2013, and operate 365 days a year.
