Business generated by members of the International Association of Professional Congress Organizers (IAPCO) was at record levels in 2008, representing a 26 per cent increase over 2007 and a combined increase of 44 per cent over 2006.

This, according to the third annual IAPCO membership review, results of which were released at IMEX 2009, in Frankfurt, Germany by Patrizia Buongiorno, IAPCA president.

Between the 95 IAPCO members from 35 countries, 5,170 meetings were organized during 2008, compared to slightly less than 4,000 in 2007.

These meetings attracted 1,968,518 delegates (compared to 1,798,000 in 2007). The greatest increase was in the number of corporate meetings managed.

But the issue is not how good 2008 was, but how will the business stand up in 2009 and 2010? Members forecast a drop of about 20 per cent in 2009.

This decline is a direct result of the economic downtown. But for 2010, the figures look to return to a growth pattern.
