The Canadian MICE industry lost a bright light and a true gentleman last week when Filipe Nepomuceno, president and owner of Altima Concept and partner at DMC Network, LLC, passed away unexpectedly on June 25, 2013. Funeral services were held in Montreal on Saturday, June 29, 2013.
Filipe founded Altima Concepts 12 years ago and its success was largely due to his great warmth, energy, spirit and zest for life, says Heather Schidlowsky, the company’s director of operations. “He was well-known and well-loved,” she says. “The degree to which he touched people has really been brought home to us in the last few days as we’ve received calls from people around the world who wanted to share their funny stories and cherished memories of Filipe.”
Susan Prophet, director of meetings, conventions and incentive travel for Destination Quebec, is one such friend. For more than a decade, she and Filipe spent time together on FAM trips and working on industry events for Quebec and SITE Canada. “He was a tremendous, loving, kind and generous individual,” she says. “He always had a smile, a hug and the traditional kisses on both cheeks! He knew how to have fun and how to make people feel comfortable.
“In 2008, we had a fabulous trip to Switzerland for the Site Conference and shared many wonderful memories of the conference and meals with colleagues. He felt these times offered him a great opportunity to meet people from all over the world and grow his business. He was always cheerful, positive and a true gentlemen,” she continues. “He will be missed by so many people who he touched over his lifetime and who felt dearly about him. I will miss him very much and his beautiful memory and spirit will live on. He was a great friend and colleague!”
His death has left a huge hole at Altima, says Schidlowsky. “We will have to try to fill it and carry on his legacy.”
Filipe leaves behind his parents, Alice and Isaac Nepomuceno; his sister, Filomena Nepomuceno; and many relatives and friends. Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Filipe’s memory are welcome.
