Kayaking in the Sonoran Desert

By Anne Dimon

Kayaking excursions are great for groups.

Kayaking on the Salt River as it winds through the Sonoran Desert just a 45-minute drive from Scottsdale is a fun, fit activity to work into a program.

Veteran river guide, Jon Colby, of Arizona Outback Adventures – a local company with a vast amount of corporate and incentive market experience  –  says the easy-paddle  river is suitable for all levels of fitness.

Excursions can be arranged for up to 90 people per tour including pick up and return transportation to the host hotel.  Instruction, equipment, plus water, snacks and dry storage bags (for cameras etc.) are provided.

Colby suggests planners block about four hours for the outing which includes the drive plus two hours on the water.  A catered lunch or dinner – set up riverside – can be coordinated to extend the day trip.

As the group paddles past desert scenery and red rocks in the distance, expect to see local birds and wildlife.
