Washington, D.C., has a number of noteworthy hotel developments, of interest to meeting and event planners, on the books.

Scheduled to open in 2014, the Washington Marriott Marquis is being built next to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and within walking distance of the shops and nightlife of D.C.’s vibrant Penn Quarter district.

The uniquely designed building (with a different façade on each side) will house 1,175 rooms and suites, over 100,000 sq. ft. of function space (including a 30,000-sq.-ft. ballroom), a spacious fitness centre and five food and beverage outlets.

The hotel is being designed to earn LEED Silver status and is a 100-per-cent non-smoking property.

Also on the Washington, D.C., hotel scene: The district is witnessing more than $8-billion worth of development, including the 49-room Capella Washington, opening January, 2013; an investment of $2.6-million in the function space at The Fairmont Washington D.C.; and the transformation of the rooftop deck at the historic Hay-Adams Hotel into an enclosed event space, with views of the White House and the Washington Monument.
