The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, which requires United States and Canadian travellers to show a passport or other identity and citizenship documentation when entering the U.S. by land or sea, takes effect June 1.

The initiative, which took effect for air travellers in January, 2007, was created to ease entry for U.S. citizens and legitimate foreign visitors as well as strengthen border security as a result of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004.
