Rising budgets challenged by increasing costs, reports MPI

The winter 2015 edition of Meeting Professionals International’s (MPI) Meetings Outlook finds that the industry is generally healthy but planners will have to sharpen their pencils as costs on the supply side outweigh increases in budgets and lead times remain short.

Key findings in the quarterly survey of planners include:

  • 53% of respondents expect budget spend to increase, with 11% forecasting budget increases of 6% or more and 42% forecasting increases in the 1% to 5% range
  • 49% of respondents expect a decline in government meetings
  • 54% of respondents expect increase in domestic (US) corporate meetings, while 23% expect uptick in international corporate segments
  • 6% of respondents say rising cost of WiFi is a trend to watch
  • 38% of respondents report that they depend on suppliers for guidance and leadership
  • virtual attendance is expected to grow 3.1% in coming year
  • live attendance is forecast to rise 2.4%
  • 59% and 61% of respondents expect to leverage virtual and hybrid options, respectively
