Samovar Champagne and Caviar Lounge, Toronto.
I attended the August 20 VIP opening for Samovar Champagne & Caviar Lounge, located in the second-floor space formerly occupied by the Laurentian Room, on Winchester Street, in downtown Toronto.
At the VIP opening, elaborately dressed gogo dancers gyrated to the pounding beats spun by DJ D Styles, in a room that would work as a corporate event facility.
Guests sipped champagne, sampled the Stolichnahya Vodka Ice Bar and nibbled on red and black caviar served on house-made blini crepes.
Also sampled were zakuskis (Russian snacks) – sausages and cured meats from a private supplier, as well as focaccia-style potato bread.
Rounding out the menu are more substantial offerings, such as shrimp stroganoff, that riff on classic Russian dishes.
On the drinks side, Samovar serves champagne, vodka and a variety of cocktails, including several featuring the ever-alluring liqueur, absinthe.
The room still features the Laurentian Room’s dark wood, augmented by Russian-themed decorative accents.
