Culinary superstar Susur Lee is opening a new restaurant in Toronto’s SoHo Metropolitan Hotel.
The Food Network judge announced that Luckee Restaurant and Bar will open this spring. Its “Nouvelle Chinoise” menu will offer classic dishes and dim sum from the culinary traditions of Guangzhou, Hunan and Szechuan regions, updated and enhanced by Lee.
Lee explains that the idea to transform the comforting and recognizable recipes of traditional Chinese food with a modern touch was inspired by his travels throughout Asia, notably Guangdong, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and Singapore. His creative ambition in developing the menu at Luckee was to present Chinese cuisine at its most sophisticated levels—as it is currently practised in Asia—for food lovers in Toronto, which is his home and professional base.
The restaurant’s look was conceived by interior design team Bent and Gable. Its interiors will subtly blend accents of imperial red and wall-to-wall panels of dynastic architecture, with a nod to 20th century chinoiserie. A dim sum bar that opens to the kitchen allows diners to watch working chefs; a private dining room for 18 guests is available for special events and custom-designed menus.
