Toronto-based celebrity chef Susur Lee has confirmed that the Thompson Hotel Group is closing Shang, the New York restaurant housed in the Thompson LES that he has helmed since its opening in 2008.

While Shang’s launch nearly four years ago was greeted by critical and popular success, the LES expansion coincided with the global financial downturn.

Furthermore, the Thompson Hotel Group has announced that it is streamlining its restaurant operations and will focus on its hotel business.

Lee and the Thompson LES are parting amicably, and the chef remains committed to his successful restaurant Zentan, housed in another Thompson brand hotel, Donovan House, in Washington, D.C.

Currently, Lee is in discussion with a number of different restaurant groups regarding joint ventures and is hopeful that he’ll be back in Manhattan soon.
