Overall airline performance has improved in the U.S., according to the results of the annual Airline Quality Rating report.

Overall airline performance has improved in the U.S., according to the results of the annual Airline Quality Rating report.

Hawaiian takes the top spot, as the best airline in the U.S., while the biggest changes was seen with Alaska, which fell from fifth place to No. 11.

The report, which was a joint effort by Wichita State University and Purdue University, tracked the performance of 18 leading U.S. airlines over the past year.

Researchers determined that the industry has improved in on-time performance, baggage handling and customer complaints. The only area where performance declines was denied boarding, which represents oversold flights.

The ranking was based on research provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Air Travel Consumer Report.

The following is the numerical ranking of America’s best airlines, with the 2009 ranking in parentheses:

5. Southwest (6)
6. Continental (8)
7. Frontier (7)
8. US Airways (10)
9. American (9)
10. ExpressJet (not ranked in 2009 report)

15. Delta (12)
16. Comair (15)
17. Atlantic Southeast (17)
