Four U.S. hotels are offering creative eco-friendly practices. In New Orleans, International House offers free parking to guests arriving in alternative-fuel vehicles and expects to introduce paperless check-in and -out soon.
In Texas, The Inn at Dos Brisas produces all the sustainable organic produce needed by its restaurant, as adjoining fields, orchards and greenhouse provide about 100 fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables.
Lake Placid Lodge, newly rebuilt, features structural insulated panels, minimizing heat loss in its walls and roof. The property has installed water stations for staff, providing permanent cups and neoprene bottles.
The Hana Maui Hotel donates its shredded office paper to local flower growers, to use as packaging, and recycles cooking oil for use as bio-diesel. Currently, it purchases about 90 per cent of its food and beverage locally.
