The Vancouver Convention Centre’s green roof has been honoured as one of the best in North America.

Green Roofs for Healthy Cities presented PWL Partnership Landscape Architects Inc. with a 2010 Award of Excellence in the Extensive Institutional category on Dec. 2.

The ceremony took place at CitiesAlive: 8th Annual Green Roof and Wall Conference and Tradeshow in Vancouver, honouring innovative green roof design in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

Completed in April, 2009, the convention centre’s green roof covers 284,650 sq. ft.

Its coastal grassland habitat encourages birds, honeybees and other insects to move between the existing natural areas within urban Vancouver.

Awards of Excellence judges said they were particularly impressed by the project’s seamless design and stormwater management profiles.
